Lulu Li Artist / Designer

Lulu Li is a cross-disciplinary designer, artist, and Zen Buddhist whose practice spans conceptual art, public sculpture, interactive media, generative art, AI fashion, and social innovation. She works with text, symbols, code, light, space, sound, and machine learning — cultivating attentive listening to bring hidden elements into realization.

An MA Fine Art graduate of Chelsea College of Art, University of the Arts London (UAL), she won the inaugural GAM Gilbert de Botton Art Prize at Tate Britain in 2010, recognised for her outstanding aesthetic ability and "subtle yet assured work." The judging panel — including artist Gary Hume, collector Alex Sainsbury, Haunch of Venison curator Nina Miall, and art critic Louisa Buck — deemed her "most likely to significantly impact the contemporary art world."

In 2024, she debuted her first fashion collaboration with Moncler Genius, transforming her AI-generated digital visions into a ready-to-wear capsule collection. Showcased at Shanghai Fashion Week alongside Rick Owens, Jil Sander, Hiroshi Fujiwara, Nigo, and ASAP Rocky, the collection was featured in Vogue Business, DesignBoom, and L'OFFICIEL Singapore. Björk was later seen wearing a piece from the runway. She is also the creator of SULFUR, an eyewear and fashion collection.

Her large-scale public installation Lightning Struck (2019, eight meters, concrete/steel/light) was acquired for the Shenzhen Pingshan International Sculpture Exhibition. Where R U... (2012) is part of K11 Shanghai's permanent collection. Her light installation series THE EMO PROJECT was first collected by K11 in 2013. Her NFT art project Panspermia (panspermia.life) explores the origin of cosmic life through self-trained machine learning models. Using StyleGAN2 to venture into the latent space — what she describes as "deep diving into cosmos' primordial soup, where abundance of life forms are found with constant startlements" — she generates speculative organisms that ask: if we one day encounter extraterrestrial life, would we even recognize it? The project draws a parallel between machine learning's generative depths and the Buddhist Shurangama Sutra's vision of eighty-four thousand forms of movement-born life proliferating across the lands.

Her Lightning Babe (电光娃娃) series, launched in 2005, drew from the imagery of 1970s Chinese female gymnasts and acrobats — their youthful energy and utopian optimism under the communist regime. The project became a defining work of its era in the Chinese design scene, widely featured on the covers of contemporary Chinese design publications and earning her the onedotzero / MTV Bloom Young Director Award in 2008.

In 2022, as a creative consultant for the Beijing Winter Olympics, she created Snowflake ID, a generative design project enabling 10 million users worldwide to participate in this global event.

As an interaction design and creative director, she led the UX and creative direction for Palace Museum Auspicious Icons (故宫祥瑞) and Night Revels of Han Xizai (韩熙载夜宴图) — two immersive apps for the Palace Museum Beijing — both winning Apple Store App of the Year (2014 & 2015). Her broader design work has also received the Red Dot Award and IF Design Award.

In 2016, she co-curated the inaugural Beijing Media Art Biennale and led its foundational theoretical research on the main theme Ethics of Technology, examining the moral dimensions of emerging technologies in art and society. In 2017 she directed the new media narrative for Lost in Play, an immersive theatre piece at Beijing's CHAO Museum, featuring real-time face-tracking projection mapping.

She co-founded Interactive Beijing (2013), a social innovation platform, and launched Our A!r — the pilot project Eco Air Bubble transformed community gym equipment into human-powered fresh air sanctuaries, winning Germany's Green Product Award and Asia's Most Influential Design Award (2015).

Selected exhibitions: Lisbon Architecture Triennial (2019), Venice Architecture Biennale (2015), B3 Moving Image Biennale (2015), CAFA Museum (2016), UCCA Beijing (2007, 2013).
